As summer winds down, it is time to send the kids back to school again! Along with shopping for new school supplies and getting back into a daily routine, now is the time to schedule your kid’s annual dental check-up as well.
A regular visit to the dentist is just as important as your child’s annual physical, since according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay affects U.S children more than any other chronic infectious disease. Oral health issues can lead to speech impediments, trouble eating, and ultimately missed school days – all of which can hinder your child’s ability to learn and thrive at school.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 40% of children suffer from tooth decay before starting kindergarten. Routine dental visits can help ensure your child does not develop cavities over time, and can help to teach them proper preventative measures.
While getting back into the swing of a daily routine again, it is also the perfect time to reestablish good dental health habits including brushing twice a day and flossing properly daily. While finishing up your shopping, let the kids pick up a new toothbrush to help get them excited about caring for their teeth and gums!

CDC Finds Over 90% of Americans Have Cavities
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) released new statistics regarding the overall oral health of our nation – and the numbers do not paint a pretty picture.
Among the findings, a reported 91% of Americans 20-years-old and older have had one or more cavities. Of this population 27% have known cavities that have not been treated.
Adding insult to injury – or decay in this case – the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Health institute found that as of three years ago, the number of people utilizing available dental care options had reached an all-time low since 1996 when the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey began keeping a record.
Of those polled, people cited cost as the number one reason why they do not plan to visit a dentist within the next year. The number two reason given for forgoing an annual visit was a belief that dental care is not necessary.
Further findings highlight that rates of untreated dental cavities are significantly higher among African and Hispanic Americans.
The ADA feels that greater outreach to those populations is a good start, but that in order to truly address and improve the state of dental health in our country more needs to be done to effectively communicated the importance of prevention.
According to ADA President Dr. Maxine Feinberg, prevention is the ultimate answer to eliminating the vast majority of dental disease.
