End of the Year Insurance Reminder

As a friendly reminder, if you have dental treatment you've put on hold, now may be a good time to schedule an appointment to maximize your insurance benefits.

Even if you don't need extensive treatment, you should schedule a regular check up and cleaning appointment to help prevent costly procedures in the future. You're probably paying a monthly premium to keep your insurance, so be sure to use it before the year end!

Now may also be a good time to use any remaining flexible account dollars. Flexible accounts are created to set aside pre-tax dollars for medical and dental expenses, but if that money is not used before the end of the year, it is lost to you forever.

Our holiday season does book quickly, so call us today at (908) 998-4698 to schedule your appointment. If you have any questions about your insurance coverage or benefits, we would be happy to help you. We look forward to seeing you!

Happy Halloween!

This Halloween, let the kids enjoy the festivities without harboring guilt about all those sweet sugary treats they will be collecting.  Check out our “tricks” for protecting your kids’ teeth without depriving them the fun of getting dressed up and going door-to-door for candy!

Trick-or-Treat … Not Trick-or-EAT
Before heading out today – explain to your little trick-or-treaters that they shouldn’t eat candy while on the go. To be safe, a responsible adult should inspect all collected goodies before any are consumed. This will also reduce the amount of treats the kids will eat, and allow everyone to enjoy the activity instead of bickering over what can and can’t be eaten. After you get home, designate a specific time each day – optimally following a meal or snack time – that one or two pieces of candy can be enjoyed.

Send a Sweet Message
Teaching your children the lesson of “everything in moderation” is an extremely important one, especially when it comes to sweets, since you don’t want to create a negative association. Halloween is a great time to enforce this idea, so once you get home go through their candy-cache along with the kids and let them pick a specific amount of items to keep and enjoy.  Then, be sure to remove the rest of the candy quickly!

Choose wisely
Not all candy is created equal, especially when it comes to impacting oral health. The worst offenders are sugary treats that are either sticky or long-lasting, such as gummy bears and lollipops.  Hard candies are doubly bad since they can also cause broken or chip teeth.  Encourage your kids to remove these items from their baskets – or better yet not pick them up at all!

To learn more about protecting your child’s teeth, visit Little Smiles of Roselle Park Dental or call us at 908-998-4698.

Ancient Teeth Found in Chinese Cave Change History

Need yet another reason to take good care of your teeth?  They may be around A LOT longer than you think!

The recent discovery of ancient fossilized teeth in a cave in South China has disproven the long-held belief that humans did not live in Asia prior to 50,000 years ago.

Scientists on Wednesday announced the discovery of teeth between 80,000 and 120,000 years old that they say provide the earliest evidence of fully modern humans outside Africa.

Understanding Your Dental Insurance

Comprehending and navigating what is and isn’t covered by your dental insurance can be confusing, but understanding your plan is an essential step towards getting the necessary care and treatment to ensure healthy teeth and gums. Just because dental work is not completely covered by your insurance does not mean that the work is not necessary.

Maximizing Your Dental Benefits.
Even if your dentist is “in network” or participates with your insurance plan, this does not translate into all of the dental work you receive being 100% covered.  As with most medical insurance plans, there is often an annual maximum dollar amount above which the patient is responsible for all additional charges.  Some plans also have a deductible – or an amount that must be spent on dental care costs – before insurance will begin covering any charges from the dentist.

What is Covered by My Plan? With hundreds of dental insurance companies all offering countless plans – it is impossible for your dentist office to accurately answer this often-asked question.  Most dental benefits are calculated on an annual basis, but not necessarily from January to December. Check with your insurance company to determine when your annual benefits start and finish.  Many plans include fine print items, such as exceptions, frequency limitations, and exclusions, as well as the disclaimer that “benefits will be determined after the insurance company receives a claim”.

How Do I Know How Much Dental Work Will Be Cost?
Since a dentist cannot submit a claim to the insurance company until after dental work has been completed, it is not possible to know exactly what will be covered vs. what the patient will be responsible for until after the dental work has been done.  While it is the patients’ responsibility to understand their dental insurance benefits, at Roselle Park Dental we will provide an estimate of coverage prior to completing any dental work.

Head Back to School with a Healthy Smile

As summer winds down, it is time to send the kids back to school again! Along with shopping for new school supplies and getting back into a daily routine, now is the time to schedule your kid’s annual dental check-up as well.

A regular visit to the dentist is just as important as your child’s annual physical, since according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tooth decay affects U.S children more than any other chronic infectious disease.  Oral health issues can lead to speech impediments, trouble eating, and ultimately missed school days – all of which can hinder your child’s ability to learn and thrive at school.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 40% of children suffer from tooth decay before starting kindergarten.  Routine dental visits can help ensure your child does not develop cavities over time, and can help to teach them proper preventative measures.

While getting back into the swing of a daily routine again, it is also the perfect time to reestablish good dental health habits including brushing twice a day and flossing properly daily. While finishing up your shopping, let the kids pick up a new toothbrush to help get them excited about caring for their teeth and gums!

To schedule your child’s annual dental visit at Little Smiles of Roselle Park Dental, visit www.littlesmilesofnj.com or call us at 908-998-4698.

CDC Finds Over 90% of Americans Have Cavities

Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease and Prevention (CDC) released new statistics regarding the overall oral health of our nation – and the numbers do not paint a pretty picture.

Among the findings, a reported 91% of Americans 20-years-old and older have had one or more cavities.  Of this population 27% have known cavities that have not been treated.

Adding insult to injury – or decay in this case – the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Health institute found that as of three years ago, the number of people utilizing available dental care options had reached an all-time low since 1996 when the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey began keeping a record.

Of those polled, people cited cost as the number one reason why they do not plan to visit a dentist within the next year.  The number two reason given for forgoing an annual visit was a belief that dental care is not necessary.

Further findings highlight that rates of untreated dental cavities are significantly higher among African and Hispanic Americans.

The ADA feels that greater outreach to those populations is a good start, but that in order to truly address and improve the state of dental health in our country more needs to  be done to effectively communicated the importance of prevention.

According to ADA President Dr. Maxine Feinberg, prevention is the ultimate answer to eliminating the vast majority of dental disease.

Don’t Forget to Change the Clocks!

While it may still feel like winter, the first day of spring IS right around the corner on March 20th - and that means it is time to turn the clocks forward one hour this weekend!

Daylight savings time (DST) ends tomorrow on March 8, 2015, resulting in one lost hour of sleep for most people in the United States as we “spring” ahead tonight.

This somewhat antiquated practice originated as a way to conserve energy and associated costs during the World Wars, and was instituted nationwide in 1966. Studies done in the 1970s pointed to a reduction in home energy use during DST since people would go to bed and rise earlier, spending less waking hours in the dark and therefore using less electricity to run lights, TVs, etc...

While the effectiveness of this technique is being questioned today, a true benefit of DST is that it serves as a good reminder that it’s time to “spring” forward to the next season, and as your bi-annual reminder to do the following:

Visit us at Roselle Park Dental! In general, the American Dental Association recommends that most people see their dentist twice a year for a check-up and cleaning, so call us today at 908-998-4698 to schedule your first cleaning of 2015.

Reverse the Direction of Ceiling Fans. In preparation for warmer weather, switch your fans to move in the counter-clockwise direction to force air down, which has a cooling effective.

Reevaluate Your Insurance Policies.  Most motor vehicle and home owner’s insurance policies re-up every six months, so reviewing the twice a year is a great way to ensure you getting the best ban for your buck.

Check Batteries in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors.  While most modern detectors are designed to chirp or beep to alert you when the batteries start to “go”, it is best practice to proactively check them twice a year.

Visit Roselle Park Dental online or call us 908-998-4698 to schedule your spring check-up and cleaning!

Celebrate Heart Month ... With a Clean Smile

Since February is American Heart Health Month, the American Heart Association is urging people to raise awareness about heart disease – including stroke, heart attacks, and other serious coronary artery diseases – which are the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, and how it can be prevented.

When people make healthy choices and are proactive about managing their health conditions, heart disease is often preventable. Mounting evidence is now showing a correlation between common periodontal conditions – such as gingivitis, cavities, and missing teeth – as predictors for heart disease. So in addition to keeping your smile healthy and beautiful, brushing and flossing may be protecting you from heart disease as well!

While experts don’t yet understand what is causing this connection, several recent studies conducted by the American Academy of Periodontology, have concluded that people with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to suffer from coronary conditions.

Findings from another study, published in Circulation: Journal of the America Heart Association discovered that the presence of a specific bacteria in the mouth was an accurate indicator of atherosclerosis, or hardening of the carotid artery. This hardening is caused by the build-up of fat deposits from the blood along the sides of the arteries, creating blockages that can eventually lead to heart attack and stroke.

While researchers know that the bacteria present in our mouths does enter our bloodstream through our gums, and has therefore been found as a component in artery-clogging build-up, they are still uncertain if prevention of periodontal diseases could also prevent heart disease.

What they do know for sure at this point, is that people who are at a higher risk for developing heart disease should take extra special care of their teeth and gums: making sure to follow proper brushing and flossing guidelines and techniques, visiting the dentist to have regular deep cleaning of the roots of their teeth, and perhaps even surgery to correct any infection or gum disease that may already be present.

Additionally, people who are at risk for developing heart disease should:
•    Maintain a healthy weight
•    Eat a heart-healthy diet
•    Exercise most days of the week
•    Control any conditions that increase risk, including diabetes, cholesterol, or high blood pressure

Learn more about the connection between periodontal diseases and heart health, or call us at 908-998-4698 to schedule an appointment!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Whether you love the excuse to get dressed up and go out for a date night, or hate the “Hallmark” holiday … this year, celebrate love AND be good to your teeth …

While you may not think Valentine’s – often celebrated with big romantic gestures, gift giving, and indulging in sweet treats – seems like a good day for your oral health … think again!

Enjoy Chocolate. Unlike most sugary candies that cause cavities, dark chocolate can actually help to protect your teeth! Thanks to its low sugar content – dark chocolate contains a 60% or more of cocoa solids, little or no added sugar, and the element theobromine, which has been proven to harden enamel – you can enjoy your Valentine’s Day treats without worrying about damaging your teeth.

Get Smoochable Breath.
After enjoying a romantic meal, munching on a piece of sugar-free gum will ensure your breath is fresh! Chewing sugar-free gum for approximately 20 minutes post-meal stimulates the production of saliva which helps to wash away leftover food particles that cause bad breath creating bacteria, and eventually leads to tooth decay.

Give the Gift of a Beautiful Smile.
This year, skip the traditional Valentine’s gift – who really needs or wants another stuffed animal or piece of jewelry? Instead, give yourself or your special someone the gift of a beautiful smile! Visit us at Roselle Park Dental for a cleaning, whitening, or even a smile simulation, where we’ll work from an image of your teeth to create a picture of what your best smile can look like using cutting edge technology.

From all of us at Roselle Park Dental, have a Happy and Healthy Valentine’s Day!

Don’t Let Sensitive Teeth Leave You Out in the Cold

Brrr – it’s cold outside!!! In addition to freezing our fingers and toes, the frigid temps can bother people with sensitive teeth as well. Inhaling frosty air has the same painful effect as eating or drinking a cold food or beverage.

Similarly, people who suffer from sensitivity to cold often have the same reaction to heat as well, which means that warming up with a steaming cup of tea or cocoa on a frigid night is out of the question!

So what causes this sensitivity to severe temperatures? Lying beneath the protective layers of enamel and gum line in our mouth is a less-dense substance called “dentin” which is made of microscopic tubes that connect to nerve endings. When the dentin is uncovered, the nerve endings become exposed to hot and cold causing discomfort.

Gum recession or enamel erosion can be the result of numerous things, including:
  • Tooth decay/Cavities
  • Fractured or Broken Teeth and Fillings
  • Gum Disease
  • Worn Teeth Enamel
  • Exposed Root
The good news is that there are ways to treat this uncomfortable condition. Possible solutions depend on what is specifically causing your sensitivity, but could include:
  • Special Desensitizing Toothpaste
  • Surgical Gum Graft
  • A Filling, Crown, Inlay or Bonding
  • Fluoride Gel
If you are suffering from sensitivity to the cold, call us at (908) 998-4698 today to learn more about how to “warm up” your teeth and feel better!

Happy New Year – Resolve to Floss in 2015!!!

As we start a new year and a new chapter, what better time to make positive changes to better our lives? Improving your overall health is a popular New Year’s resolution, but this year we encourage you to take it one step further and improve your dental health!

Flossing daily, as recommended by the American Dental Association, is an essential component of your dental care routine that is often skipped. However remembering to floss regularly has a host of benefits, including removing plaque that can cause tartar buildup and eventually lead to gum disease and cavities.

Although flossing only takes a few minutes and should be painless (when done correctly), many people fail to do so, because they find it challenging, run out of time, or simply because they forget.

It’s too hard! For those who skip this essential step due to difficulty, perhaps trying a different form of floss might be the solution. For example, people who suffer from limited dexterity in their hands and fingers may struggle with traditional string floss, but using a dental pick or pre-threaded flosser should make maneuvering between teeth much easier and more effective!

I am too tired! While most people do brush their teeth before retiring at night, taking the extra few minutes to floss at the end of a long day can just seem like too much effort! The important thing is that you floss once a day, but it does not matter what time of day you do it. So why not try making it part of your morning routine instead? Too rushed in the morning? What about brushing and flossing after lunch? The key is to find a convenient time every day, and then make it part of your regular routine.

Oops - I forgot … again!
The hardest part of forming a new habit can sometimes just be remembering to do it.  A few tried and true ways to get a new behavior to stick include:
  1. Visual Reminders: Write yourself a post-it note and stick it to the bathroom mirror
  2. Start Small: Committing to floss just one tooth at a time can be a less daunting task and therefore make it easier to integrate into your routine. Chances are once you get started you’ll go ahead and floss them all!
  3. Celebrate Success: Give yourself a gold star or even just a simple check mark on the calendar!
Taking the moment to acknowledge that you’ve ACCOMPLISHED your goal will encourage continued success!

From all of us at Roselle Park Dental, have a happy and healthy new year. Here's to a great 2015!!!

For more information about how to make flossing part of your daily routine, call Roselle Park Dental at (908) 998-4698 or visit www.roselleparkdental.com.
