While it may still feel like winter, the first day of spring IS right around the corner on March 20th - and that means it is time to turn the clocks forward one hour this weekend!
Daylight savings time (DST) ends tomorrow on March 8, 2015, resulting in one lost hour of sleep for most people in the United States as we “spring” ahead tonight.
This somewhat antiquated practice originated as a way to conserve energy and associated costs during the World Wars, and was instituted nationwide in 1966. Studies done in the 1970s pointed to a reduction in home energy use during DST since people would go to bed and rise earlier, spending less waking hours in the dark and therefore using less electricity to run lights, TVs, etc...
While the effectiveness of this technique is being questioned today, a true benefit of DST is that it serves as a good reminder that it’s time to “spring” forward to the next season, and as your bi-annual reminder to do the following:
